Briton-Korean Aitken won an incident-packed race for Campos Racing in Baku. Frenchman Boccolacci also completed an impressive race with a recovery drive moving from 16th to 5th

Campos Racing secured this morning the first victory of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship season as Jack Aitken drove a hard-charging and faultless race in his Dallara F2 2018. Dorian Boccolacci finished in fifth place to round off a strong result for the Spain-based team.

On Friday, after a positive free practice session, Aitken and Boccolacci felt optimistic heading into the qualifying. Unfortunately, neither Jack nor Dorian managed to put all three of their best sectors together. Aitken qualified 8th on the starting grid with his best lap of 1m55.949s. On the other hand, Boccolacci set to start from 16th for Saturday’s Feature Race with a personal best lap time of 1m56.653s.

When the lights went out, Aitken moved up to third with Boccolacci also running in the top-ten after the first lap when he avoided a first-corner pileup. When race leader Nobuharu Matsushita was hit by mechanical issues, Aitken still gained another place. When Aitken made his mandatory pit stop on lap 6, Campos Racing crew’s super-fast work allowed him to take over the lead. Boccolacci made his pit stop shortly after and the Frenchman had climbed to eighth place.

Despite several VSC initiated and a safety car period, which was deployed at the end and ruined Aitken’s solid lead, Campos Racing’s Dallara F2 2018 still remained leading the pack. Aitken kept Nyck de Vries at bay in the final two laps to take the checkered flag as race winner. Boccolacci’s late charge allowed him to move up to fifth.

Tomorrow’s Race 2 is scheduled at 13.10 local time (GMT +4).

Adrian Campos (Campos Racing President): “We are very happy about Jack‘s victory! He personally and the whole team deserve it! This result makes him and the team a strong contender to fight for the Championship!“

Jack Aitken (Campos Racing Driver): “I’m delighted with this result and very pleased with our race strategy. Especially after some bad luck in Qualifying. It’s a well-deserved result after two exciting first laps in which we noticed we had chances to claim a win here!. Despite several setbacks during the race, we managed to keep in P1! We have now to keep working to bring the curtain down on the weekend in the best possible way.”

Dorian Boccolacci (Campos Racing Driver): “I’m extremely happy to have contributed to collect valuable points and make progress in the Teams’ classification. After a sensational start avoiding any clash, I managed to set a good race pace. Unfortunately I struggled a bit with tire wear but the safety car periods helped me to move through the field.”
