The “Home of British Motor Racing” will host the seventh round of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship season with Boschung and Caldwell at the wheel of the Campos Racing-entered Dallara F2 machinery
Campos Racing is ready for a new chapter of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship season, which is set to take part at Silverstone this weekend. The Spanish-based Racing team will run its two Dallara F2 2018 cars for Swiss racer Ralph Boschung and local favorite Olli Caldwell in the frame of the F1 British Grand Prix, one of the most iconic events on the calendar.
Campos Racing is still in the battle despite difficulties and struggles experienced during three last rounds. Boschung made a very solid start to the season in Barhain bringing two fourth-place finishes home. Boschung and the team continued taking strides forwards when the series arrived in Europe securing their first podium of the season in Imola. Unfortunately, Boschung’s neck problems would begin on Italian soil and he was forced to withdraw two events: Campos Racing home round in Barcelona and urban street challenge in Monaco. The Swiss racer, despite struggling physically, still made it into the points in Baku by finishing in ninth place.
Briton Caldwell has seen his performances hampered by bad luck in the last meetings and his goal will be to achieve his season his season’s best result in front of his home crowd. It is expected to be a very special weekend for Caldwell as it will mark his first outing in a F2 car at Silverstone, which will be also a powerful morale booster for the British driver.
Silverstone is built on the site of a WWII airfield situated 4 miles south of Towcester in Northamptonshire. No doubts, the British circuit is one of the world’s best and well-known race tracks as it hosted the first World Championship Formula 1 race back in 1950. Over the years, the layout has significantly changed but its nature remains the same as a high-speed circuit. Famous bends such as Becketts or Maggots continue featuring a challenge for drivers, cars and tires due to huge lateral acceleration forces. Asphalt abrasion isn’t particularly high but tire stress is certainly a key factor due to above mentioned high-speed corners. Pirelli has nominated P Zero White hard and P Zero Red soft compounds for Silverstone.
Free practice and qualifying sessions will take place on Friday at 11.45 and 18.30 respectively. Saturday’s sprint race is scheduled at 18.00 with Sunday’s main race, which includes a mandatory pit stop for tire change, taking place at 11.05. All times are CET.
Adrián Campos (Campos Racing Team Principal): “Silverstone is a very demanding race track due to its flowing nature. You make a mistake, you lose time in three corners in succession. We expect to have Ralph (Boschung) in good shape and see him in the same top form showed in the first races of the season. Olli (Caldwell) will contest his home round and we will support him as much as possible to score his first points in the series.”
Ralph Boschung (Campos Racing Driver of FIA Formula 2); “Silverstone is a very nice track with many high-speed corners, which bring plenty of excitement for racing drivers. I think we have a good margin to improve on this circuit. I’m looking forward to making a comeback stronger thank in Baku. To be honest, I’m still experiencing some issues with my neck but it’s improving every day. Probably we could have some rain over the weekend, which definitely would spice up racing action further more. It’s going to be an interesting weekend and we expect to bring more points home.”
Olli Caldwell (Campos Racing Driver of FIA Formula 2): “Really excited to be heading to Silverstone for my home race of the season, especially after having driven the Alpine F1 car there a few weeks prior. The track is fast with a lot of overtaking opportunities so looking to get a good result!”
