Finland’s driver delivered a strong performance in both Formula 3 races finishing third and fourth. Iorio and Das collected points. Race incidents ruined Vivacqua’s chances
Campos Racing scored another podium finish at the antepenultimate round of the Euroformula F3 Open at the Monza circuit. Finnish Simo Laaksonen, who took his maiden podium in the series at the Hungaroring, claimed another rostrum finish on his own merit with his Dallara F312. Brazilian Matheus Iorio and American Cameron Das also collected points but unfortunately Thiago Vivacqua couldn’t continue the same positive path as race incidents ruined his chances to run in podium contention.
After Thursday and Friday testing, when Campos Racing and their drivers achieved some good set-up work, Q1 took place on Saturday morning. Laaksonen qualified fourth and his teammate Vivacqua also made it into the top ten taking 9th on the grid. Das and Iorio took 14th and 15th spots on the grid. Later in the race, Laaksonen ran in third place for several laps but finally dropped to fourth. Das finished tenth and Iorio came 15th. Vivacqua had a puncture as another rival hit him. After forcing to pit, Brazil’s Vivacqua rejoined the race but one lap down.
On Sunday, Laaksonen improved in Q2 and lined up third on the grid. Vivacqua also performed better in the second qualifying session and put his Dallara in sixth place. On the other hand, Iorio and Das posted qualified 15th and 18th respectively. It was an incident-packed race with two safety cars periods. Vivacqua’s race came to an early end after a collision. Laaksonen passed Ameya Vaidyanathan for second but with two laps to go he dropped to third. Iorio and Das brought seventh and eighth places home.
The Euroformula F3 Open will head to Jerez next weekend.
