The Campos Racing duo gained places from rivals after good pit strategy and ran in a podium contention for most of their race on Saturday
Campos Racing and their drivers in the FIA Formula 2, Ralph Boschung and Robert Visoiu, couldn’t continue their points-scoring streak at Silverstone but the Alzira-based duo showed pace and potential over the weekend.
Boschung and Visoiu completed 33 laps in Thursday’s free practice. The Swiss driver clocked a time of 1:42.284 and Romania’s Visoiu posted a lap of 1:42.677. On Friday afternoon, Visoiu and Boschung didn’t manage to execute a perfect lap due to traffic. Boschung set a lap time of 1:40.394 to line up 16th on the grid. Visoiu’s best lap was his 1:40.412 but he was given a 3-place grid penalty at the Red Bull Ring and was poised to start from the very back of the field.
On Saturday, Boschung and Visoiu overtook several rivals in the first few laps. They started on the hardest compound and their longer first stint got them in front of the drivers who were running on the soft tires. Both Campos Racing-entered Dallara cars ran in second (Boschung) and third (Visoiu) place the most laps in the race. They both managed to match Nobuharu Matsushita’s pace, who led the field until the mandatory pits stops, and excelled tire management. Finally, Boschung pitted on lap 20 and Visoiu on lap 21. Finally, Boschung took 11th place home and Visoiu ended up 17th.
On Sunday, the young talented pairing of Campos Racing gained some positions on lap one. Boschung was fighting for another points-paying finish but he went off track on lap 19. The Swiss driver was trying to pass Alex Albon but the latter moved to the inside and Boschung was pushed off the track. Visoiu finished 12th.
The next FIA Formula 2 event will take place at the Hungaroring in two weeks’ time.
