The Mahindra Racing Formula E Team car run by Campos Racing finished third the SWUSP Beijing ePrix with Heidfeld at the wheel. Turvey came 6th with NEXTEV TCR Formula E
Campos Racing, currently running two Formula E teams in 2015/16 season, started its second campaign in the FIA Formula E Series on positive mood: with one of its drivers stepping onto the podium. Germany´s Nick Heidfeld made his way into third place after 26 laps in Beijing, where the opening round takes place.
In morning´s qualifying session, Heidfeld finished 3rd with his 1:38.339 set in Super Pole, behind both e.dams cars. His teammate Bruno Senna, with another Mahindra-entered car, was 7th fastest and a personal best of 1:38.761. On the other hand, NEXTEV TCR Formula E delivered a far less positive performance, as Briton Oliver Turvey was 15th on the starting grid (1:39.774) and defending champion Nelson Piquet Jr. last. The Brazilian racer crashed in FP1 and had limited testing in FP2, so he couldn´t improve that place.
As the lights went out and the field rushed to Turn 1, Heidfeld managed to pass Nicolas Prost on the outside for second. Behind, Brazil´s Senna made another good start to move up to fifth. Behind, both Turvey and Piquet also overtook several cars. First Full Course Yellow brought out the yellow flag on lap 4, with Heidfeld several seconds behind race leader Sebastien Buemi. On lap seven, Senna dropped to 7th as he was in close battle with Loïc Duval. On lap 13, Heidfeld made his mandatory pit stop and rejoined the race 3rd, behind Buemi and Lucas di Grassi. Another Full Course Yellow came out a lap later, at the same moment when Piquet and Turvey pitted. They took advantage from yellow as other drivers were circulating slower. Unfortunately Piquet lost two laps due to a minor technical problem.
When the green flags signaled clear track to race on, Prost passed Heidfeld, but shortly after the Frenchman was forced to head into the pit-lane with rear wing damage. So, Heidfeld inherited 3rd place on the rostrum keeping both Dragon drivers Duval and Jerome D´Ambrosio at bay during two thrilling final laps. Turvey took the checkered flag sixth, with Senna 13th. Piquet came 15th two laps down.
FIA Formula E´s Round 2 takes place at Putrajaya (Malaysia) on 7 November.
