The team achieved its first 1-2 finish of the season at the Hungaroring with Vivacqua and Laaksonen. Hyman stepped onto the podium on Sunday on his debut. Iorio also made it into the points
Campos Racing delivered a strong performance while contesting the round 4 of the Euroformula Open at the Hungaroring. The Alzira-based team secured its first 1-2 finish of the season with Brazil’s Thiago Vivacqua and Finland’s Simo Laaksonen, the latter also stepping first onto the Rookies’ podium. Besides, South-African Raoul Hyman took 4th place, making an excellent start to the event. On Sunday, Hyman climbed onto the podium and Laaksonen brought fourth place home and took second in rookie class. Brazilian Matheus Iorio also scored points in race 2.
Campos Racing and their four drivers showed competitive pace from the very beginning during Thursday’s private test sessions. But they still improved on Friday as Hyman emerged fastest. On Saturday, the drivers racing under the Campos Racing banner bordered on perfection. Hyman snatched the pole position and Laaksonen and Vivacqua took 2nd and 3rd on the starting grid. Iorio qualified 8th-fastest. In Race 1, Vivacqua made a sensational start to move into the lead with Laaksonen and Hyman running right behind. Unfortunately, Iorio was forced to retire following a crash at T1. Hyman dropped to fourth during the middle stages of the race but Vivacqua and Laaksonen still managed to finish first and second respectively. Fourth place was still an excellent reward for Hyman’s effort.
On Sunday, Hyman set the 5th fastest lap of Q2 ahead of Laaksonen and Vivacqua. Iorio started 15th on the grid. Hyman and Laaksonen moved up to third and fourth respectively at the start avoiding a crash. After 19 laps, Hyman finished third with Laaksonen fourth. Vivacqua took 7th place and his fellow countryman iorio was 9th.
After the summer break, the season resumes at Silverstone on 2-3 September.
