Spaniard Merhi finished ninth on Saturday and improved to take 6th in a difficult race two with mixed conditions of dry and rain weather. Ghiotto’s weekend got dashed following his early retirement on Saturday
The penultimate round of the FIA Formula 2 came to an end today at Sochi. Roberto Merhi made a good debut in his Campos Vexatec Racing-run Dallara F2 2018 during the Russian venue of the main Formula 1 feeder series. Luca Ghiotto experienced a difficult weekend as he retired early in race 1 and it compromised his weekend.
In free practice session, Ghiotto and Merhi completed more than 30 laps putting valuable experience under their belt ahead of qualifying. Ghiotto took up the sixth spot on the starting grid with a best lap of 1m47.151s. Merhi posted a lap of 1m47.854s to line up 12th despite a red flag made things much more difficult.
Ghiotto couldn’t take advantage from his good starting position as he was forced to retire after a clash with a rival. Merhi moved through the field to finish ninth in the points-paying positions.
On Sunday, race 2 was even more challenging. Merhi made a good start and Ghiotto also gained several places in the opening stages by overtaking no less than six cars. But rain started to fall and Merhi and Ghiotto pitted for wet tires. Merhi, one of the most naturally gifted drivers in rain conditions, charged to take sixth place at the end scoring remarkable points for Campos Vexatec Racing. Ghiotto finished 14th after starting from the back of the field.
The season finale will take place at Yas Marina on 24-25 November.
