Campos Racing has high hopes for the new season after round 1. Coletti set the fastest lap on Saturday and newcomer Boschung enjoyed a positive debut in the FIA Formula 2 Championship

Campos Racing and its driver duo, Ralph Boschung and Stefano Coletti, kicked off the 2017 FIA Formula 2 season in Sakhir in the frame of F.1 Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit.

During Friday, Boschung and Coletti completed 12 and 16 laps in the morning’s single free practice session clocking lap times of 1:43.479 and 1:43.632 respectively. Later, in qualifying, both Campos Racing drivers pushed hard to string some competitive laps together but yellow flags came out and they couldn’t put a perfect lap together. As a result, Swiss Boschung took 16th spot on the grid with a lap of 1:40.501. His Monegasque teammate, Coletti, ended up three places behind but received a 5 place grid penalty for failing to slow sufficiently for session’s second Virtual Safety Car period. As Coletti couldn’t drop five places, he was forced to start from the pit lane the following day.

On Saturday, Boschung chose to start on his hard compound set of tires. Meanwhile Coletti started on the soft compound tire from the pit lane, as was previously mentioned. On the first lap, Boschung gained two places into 14th, with Coletti behind also moving through the field and putting in another brilliant recovery drive. With the field running pretty close together, Coletti made his way toward pit lane on lap 10. After having rejoined the race, Monaco’s driver emerged as the fastest man on track. At the same time, Boschung was already running in the top-ten before making his mandatory pit stop on lap 17. As always, Sakhir’s temperatures caused fast tire wear and each and every driver struggled during the final stages of the race. Boschung came 13th and Coletti, who posted the fastest lap with a time of 1:45.843, finished 16th.

Finally, on Sunday, Coletti made a sensational race start and moved up to ninth on lap one. Behind, Boschung was running 14th when the safety car was deployed following a crash on the opening lap. At the restart, Coletti battled throughout the race with several drivers and finally took the checkered flag 15th, meanwhile Boschung was forced to retire on lap ten.

Round 2 will take place at the team’s home round at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 12-14 May.
