Evans finished 8th on Saturday and secured pole position on Sunday but the New Zealander was pushed out by Malja
Pertamina Campos Racing and their duo of New Zealand´s Mitch Evans and Indonesia´s Sean Gelael earned points at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, which hosted the ninth round of the GP2 Series last weekend.
Evans made a positive start to the weekend with his fourth place at the wheel of his Dallara in the single free practice session after clocking a time of 1:32.413. With his 1:33.340, Gelael also showed a competitive pace. Later in qualifying, Evans proved to be a Monza specialist with his fifth place and posting a time of 1:31.666. Later, he inherited fourth place as Antonio Giovinazzi was excluded from qualifying as his tire pressure was found to be below the limit. Gelael struggled to have a clean lap and lined up 17th on the starting grid with a lap time of 1:32.481.
In race one, Evans dropped several places at the start as he had to avoid an incident on the opening lap but he still ran in the top-eight for the rest of the race. After a safety car period at the hallway point, Evans fended off from his rivals his 8th place and secured pole position for race 2. Gelael experienced a troublesome race but still gained experience for Sunday´s race.
Evans and Pertamina Campos Racing was eying a win in race 2 but early this goal came to an early end when the young New Zealander was pushed out by Gustav Malja on lap one and resulting in an early retirement. Gelael , with another Dallara racing under Pertamina Campos Racing banner, took the checkered flag in 16th place after starting from the back of the field.
The GP2 Series heads to Malaysia where the penultimate round takes place next month.
