Spaniard Oriola finished 3rd in race 2 with a Team Oscaro by Campos Racing-entered Cupra León TCR. Filippi also collected first points in Marrakech
Team Oscaro by Campos Racing clinched their first podium finish in the all-new WTCR with Pepe Oriola stepping up onto the rostrum third with his Cupra León TCR. His teammate John Filippi, with another León TCR, also completed a strong weekend of solid drives at Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech.
Oriola was 5th fastest in free practice sessions and later in qualifying Filippi posted 6th-quickest lap time with a 1:25.405s. Oriola couldn’t repeat his previous effort due to traffic and his 1m25.947s left him 15th on the grid. Saturday’s race 1 took place in the afternoon and was red-flagged as a result of a start pile up. The race was restarted some minutes later and Filippi came tenth. Oriola couldn’t take the checkered flag due to a last lap retirement.
On Sunday, Oriola secured pole position for race 2 by setting tenth fastest lap time in Q2. During the 20-lap race Oriola lost two places after being passed by Jean-Karl Vernay and Mehdi Bennani at the start. The Spanish driver still finished 3rd. Filippi couldn’t make it into the points this time. In race 3, Oriola started from row five and finished tenth. Filippi moved through the field to finish 11th.
WTCR’s round 2 will take place at Hungaroring on 28-29 April.
