The Spaniard driver of Team Oscaro by Campos Racing came second on Saturday and rounded out his strong weekend with fourth and sixth places on Sunday. Oriola will remain in title fight in Japan and Macau
Pepe Oriola and Team Oscaro by Campos Racing continued their streak of results in the World Touring Car Cup in Wuhan, the antepenultimate round of the series, and the Spaniard was another strong contender throughout the weekend. His teammate John Filippi was less fortunate as he couldn’t collect points this time.
Oriola posted the 2nd-fastest lap time in free practice testing and headed into qualifying with high spirits. At the wheel of his CUPRA TRC car, Oriola clocked a time of 1m22.890s, a mere 0.044 seconds slower than Jean-Karl Vernay’s pole time. Filippi set to start from row ten with a best lap of 1m23.777s. Later in the race, Oriola managed to convert his qualifying result into a second position. Filippi moved up to 16th at the end of the race.
On Sunday, in the second qualifying session, Oriola secured a seventh place in Q2 and put himself in a position to fight for another podium in the remaining two races. Oriola took the checkered flag in fourth place in the second race and came sixth in the final race. Oriola now sits fourth in the Drivers’ standings on 207 points. Filippi crashed out while fighting with Thed Björk and Yvan Muller in the second race and his car couldn’t be repaired on time for race 3.
The penultimate round of the season will take place at Suzuka (Japan) on 27-28 October.
