Ghiotto finished sixth and seventh and Nissany came tenth to bring a solid points haul for the Spain-based team at Spa-Francorchamps
Campo Vexatec Racing completed a positive weekend of FIA Formula 2 action at Spa-Francorchamps in the frame of the Belgian Grand Prix. Luca Ghiotto and Roy Nissany made it into the points and Campos Vexatec Racing continues to improve.
On Friday, Ghiotto was sixth fastest in the free practice session and later improved to clock a time of 1m56.611s in his Campos Vexatec Racing-run Dallara F2 2018 to line up fourth on the starting grid. His teammate Nissany took 17th spot on the grid by posting a lap of 1m57.773s.
Saturday’s race 1 saw Ghiotto losing three places at the start but only a lap later the Italian driver was already moved up to sixth after overtaking Alex Albon. Ghiotto made his mandatory pit stop on lap nine – Nissanny pitted just one lap later- to pass Nirei Fukuzumi and Alessio Lorandi shortly after, the latter still to stop and struggling with tires and losing the rear. Despite the safety car was deployed with eight laps to go, Ghiotto managed to hold off rivals to finish seventh and secure a front row start on Sunday. On the other hand, Nissany came tenth.
Today, Ghiotto kept his rivals at bay at race start but his pace wasn’t good enough to defend second place from Nyck de Vries, Lando Norris, Artem Markelov and Albon. Finally, the Campos Vexatec Racing driver brought a sixth place home ahead of series leader George Russell. Nissany, who ran in seventh place in the opening stages of the race, ended up 14th after losing several places at the end due to tire wear.
The FIA Formula 2 Championship continues at Italy’s Temple of Speed at Monza next weekend.
