Ghiotto finished third on Saturday after putting a faultless recovery drive in. Merhi equaled his third place finish on Sunday to close the season in style for Campos Vexatec Racing

Campos Vexatec Racing delivered a strong performance at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, where the FIA Formula 2 came to an end this weekend. Luca Ghiotto and Roberto Merhi completed an almost perfect weekend in their Campos Vexatec Racing’s Dallara F2 2018 as they both stepped third onto the rostrum, which was a well-deserved reward for the Spain based team’s massive effort throughout the season.

On Friday, both drivers made a strong start to the weekend in the free practice session as Ghiotto clocked 3rd-fastest lap time of 1m52.315s with Merhi ranking sixth with hs 1m52.395s. Unfortunately, they couldn’t repeat in qualifying as neither Ghiotto nor Merhi could put together their sectors in the same lap due to yellow flags. As a result, Merhi lined up 12th on the starting grid with his lap time of 1m50.513s and Ghiotto set a lap time of 1m50.892s to start from 17th on the grid. Anyway, everybody at Campos Vexatec Racing felt optimistic as the race pace was extremely strong.

Said and done. Both Campos Vexatec Racing overtook several drivers from the very beginning and, in lap six, Merhi was running in sixth place and Ghitto had moved up to eleventh. Merhi, as almost the rest of the field, made his mandatory pit stop in lap 7. On the other hand, Campos Vexatec Racing and Ghiotto chose a different pit strategy starting on the “Soft” compound instead of “Super Soft” – in which his rivals made the opening stint– and led until his pit stop in lap 25. Ghiotto rejoined in fifth place but, after setting the fastest lap, overtook Nyck de Vries and Lando Norris to finish third. Merhi took the checkered flag in 8th place securing the pole position for Sunday’s race 2.

Today, with Merhi starting from the pole position, the Spaniard couldn’t keep Antonio Fuoco at bay. Despite that, Merhi ran in second place for almost the entire race. Just at the end Norris managed to pass him when Merhi was struggling with tire wear but another third place for Campos Vexatec Racing was a great ending to the season. Ghiotto came ninth today.

Campos Vexatec Racing’s FIA Formula 2 season is now over but its preseason is just about to start. The first collective test will take place next Friday and Saturday at the Yas Marina Circuit.
