Ghiotto remained in the hunt for a podium place in both races held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Nissany ran seventh on Saturday but finally couldn’t bring it home
Campos Vexatec Racing and Luca Ghiotto achieved a big points haul at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which was the home round for the Alzira-based team and where Round 3 of the FIA Formula 2 took place. After Lady Luck dashed their chances in Bahrain and Baku, Campos Vexatec Racing and Ghiotto managed to put in some eye-catching performances in Barcelona. Roy Nissany was also targeting top results on Saturday but finally he couldn’t secure a point-paying place finish.
Ghiotto posted the 3rd-fastest lap in the free practice session with a lap time of 1m29.764s. Nissany also made it into the top-ten with a ninth-fastest lap of 1m30.337s. Later in qualifying, Ghiotto repeated the same result with a best lap of 1m28.400s, a mere two tenths of a second slower tham the polesitter’s time. Nissany took the 15th spot on the grid with his 1m29.284s.
On Saturday, Ghiotto charged into third place in the opening stages of the race but Alex Albon got past him on the main straight on lap 5. After two Virtual Safety Car periods, racing action was back on lap 13. Before his mandatory pit stop, Ghiotto overtook Albon for third. By then, Nissany was in seventh place. The latter was the first Campos Vexatec Racing to pit on lap 25. Ghiotto also pitted on the following lap. After another “VSC”, Ghiotto took the ckeckered flag in 4th place and Nissany ended up 12th.
Today, Ghiotto moved up into second place but later lost three places in closely-fought battle with Sergio Sette Camara, Lando Norris and Albon. After a first “Virtual Safety Car”, Ghiotto overtook Albon at the restart. The Italian driver fended off his rivals until almost the very end when, due to tire wear, George Russell got past him. Nissany finished 14th after losing several places on the opening lap.
The Formula 1 feeder series will head to Monte Carlo in two weeks’ time.
