Vivacqua secured podium finish in race 2 with solid driving in wet conditions. Florescu, Iorio and Laaksonen also showed good performances over two days and Campos Racing set their sights on launching title charges
Campos Racing completed another Winter Series event of the Euroformula F3 Open, this time taking place at Paul Ricard HTTT. The French track brought the Alzira-based team some good results once again and Thiago Vivacqua, Petru Florescu, Matheus Iorio and Simo Laaksonen were among the fastest under very different weather conditions.
On Friday, after four test sessions, Vivacqua and Florescu finished 3rd and 5th fastest in the timesheets with their lap times of 2:00.139 and 2:00.287. Laaksonen, in his first appearance in the series, and Iorio also secured top-ten places lapping in 2:00.
Then, in a rain-soaked qualifying session on Saturday morning, Vivacqua spearheaded Campos Racing effort with his third place on the grid by clocking a time of 2:17.299. Laaksonen took 6th on the starting grid and both Iorio and Florescu were forced to start from the back of the grid as they couldn´t improve at the end of the 30-minute qualifying session.
Saturday´s race 1 was even much more challenging than morning´s qualifying session and it was started behind the safety-car. Vivacqua ran in contention for the podium during 14 laps and finally took 5th. Laaksonen, on his debut, spun out and retired from the race but it didn´t dampen his flawless performance and a top-5 finish was within reach. Iorio and Florescu drew valuable information for race 2 despite couldn´t finish in the top-ten.
Later in race 2, Vivacqua shone once again and finally grabbed a third place finish. Florescu came 7th and Laaksonen moved through the field to take 10th place ahead of Iorio. Florescu and Iorio made steady progress in wet conditions and for sure the lessons learned will be useful for their title assault in the upcoming season.
The Winter Series will come to an end in Jerez on 21-22 March.
