Swiss driver Boschung claimed a double point-paying finish and started from pole position on Sunday. Visoiu also performed well but finally failed to score points

Campos Racing’s effort and hard work together with Ralph Boschung and Robert Visoiu brought the best results of the season at Azerbaijan’s Baku City Circuit, the fastest street circuit on the calendar. Both drivers were making their first outing at Baku but they delivered strong performances in their Dallara GP2/11 cars but their previous preparation with Campos Racing and its staff of engineers bore fruit.

Friday´s free practice was an eventful session and it was interrupted by red flags and virtual safety cars. Despite it was extremely difficult to complete a clean flying lap, Boschung set 6th-fastest with his lap of 1:55.098 and Romanian Visoiu posted 13-fastest lap time with a best lap of 1:55.771. Later in qualifying, Visoiu would start 10th in row five with his 1:53.670 and Boschung qualified to start from row 8 with lap of 1:54.339.

Saturday’s race was marred by a safety car incident but it headed into the pit lane after three laps. Visoiu, after losing some places on lap one, moved up to 10th five laps later. Then, on lap seven, he pitted for his set of medium tires after running on the soft compound at the start. Up the front, Boschung was running in second place as he started on the medium tires and was going for a longer stint. Boschung was keeping back rivals with smart defensive moves despite they were on fresher tires. Finally, the feature race was brought to an early end following a red flag following a pile-up. Swiss Boschung still managed to secure 8th place and pole position for Sunday. On the other hand, Visoiu handed a 10 second penalty after being judged to have failed to sufficiently slow for yellow flags. As a result, he finished 15th.

Today, in sprint race, Boschung started from the pole and fought with Charles Leclerc, Nicholas Latifi and Norman Nato. The latter, who claimed sprint race win, clashed with Boschung and it resulted in damage for the driver of Campos Racing. He still secured another points finish with his 8th place. Visoiu finished 12th.

The FIA Formula 2 will head to Austria in two weeks’ time with another double-header at Red Bull Ring.
