The Brazilian driver is the first-ever title winner of the FIA Formula E, the world championship for electric cars, after a thrilling season-closer
NEXTEV TCR and Campos Racing will go down in history, with their driver Nelson Piquet Jr., as the first champions in the FIA Formula E, taking the title after finishing seventh on Sunday´s race of the Visa London ePrix. Today´s qualifying session, which took place in wet conditions, wasn´t an easy one for Piquet Jr., who was 16th with his teammate Oliver Turvey 12th.
With more than 25.000 people attending the event in Battersea Park, Piquet completed a clever race, moving up to 10th place before pitting. Sebastien Buemi, his main rival for the title, spun and dropped one place. By then Piquet Jr. was overtaking Turvey and finally he made a marvelous overtaking maneuver on Salvador Durán, rewarding him with seventh place and securing title. Turvey came 9th.
It was a long and restless season, but the title was a well-deserved result and, besides, making history in motorsport of the twenty-first century.
