The Alzira-based team ran away to victory in tricky conditions. Its pit strategy and faultless drives produced by Evans and Gelael reflected on the historic 1-2 finish
Pertamina Campos Racing and its drivers New Zealand´s Mitch Evans and Indonesia´s Sean Gelael achieved another milestone in the GP2 Series with they both finishing first and second respectively this Saturday. Evans led Pertamina Campos Racing 1-2 in Spielberg with Gelael celebrating his first podium in the main F1 feeder series.
In qualifying, neither Evans nor Gelael managed to have a clear flying lap due to yellow flags and traffic. Evans lined up 10th on the grid for Saturday´s feature race with a time of 1:14.574 and Gelael clocked 18th with his 1:15.112. Starting on the super soft compound tires, Evans and Gelael avoided any on-track incidents and pitted for their soft set of tires on lap 8th and 9th respectively. With rain being reported by drivers on lap 15, the safety car was deployed when Pierre Gasly spun off. Shortly after the restart, the safety car was deployed again and finally the race was red flagged when Artem Markelov crashed in the pit lane. After many drivers switched to rain tires and then again to slick, Evans and Gelael took advantage from the situation and climbed up to first and second.
When the race was restarted, on dry asphalt, Evans and Gelael pulled away from their rivals to secure first 1-2 finish of the season for Pertamina Campos Racing. Besides, Evans clocked the fastest lap.
Now, Evans lies 3rd overall in the drivers´ standings.
Tomorrow, Gelael and Evans will start 7th and 8th on the reverse grid.
