Italian Colombo made his first appearance in Formula 3 with 5th and 6th place finishes. Laaksonen, Iorio and Vivacqua also scored points at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Campos Racing contested the season finale of the Euroformula F3 Open at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the traditional season closer, last weekend. It was a tough race weekend as several race incidents dashed Campos Racing drivers’ hopes but Lorenzo Colombo still made an impression on his Formula 3 debut. In the same way, Matheus Iorio, Simo Laaksonen and Thiago Vivacqua collected more points and Cameron Das also made it into the top ten on Sunday after his early retirement on Saturday.

Campos Racing and their drivers carried out positive private testing on Thursday working on set-up. In fact, during Friday’s free practice sessions Colombo emerged fastest overall at the end of the day with his 1:39.330.

On Saturday, in Q1, Colombo spearheaded the charge once again and took 5th spot on the grid with his lap of 1:37.957. Das qualified 9th (1:38.479) and Laaksonen started alongside on tenth place (1:38.484). Iorio and Vivacqua lined up 12th and 13th with their laps of 1:38.499 and 1:38.546, proving how close the times were.

Race 1 wasn’t exactly brilliant at the start as Colombo dropped four places and Das’ race came to an early end as Joey Mawson crashed into his car. Finally, Colombo moved through the field to finish 6th. Iorio and Vivacqua also put good recovery drives in to finish eighth and tenth respectively. Laaksonen finished 11th.

On Sunday’s Q2, Colombo and Laaksonen posted lap times of 1:38.458 and 1:38.545 to take 8th and 9th on the grid. Vivacqua (1:38.694) was 11th-fastest with Das and Iorio taking 13rd (1:38.778) and 14th (1:38.834) on the starting grid. Two tenths of a second could make a big difference as qualifying times were extremely tight.

This time, Colombo gained a place at the start and then moved up to sixth after overtaking Jannes Fittje on lap 6. Laaksonen also overtook another car on the first lap and brought 8th place home. Vivacqua, Das and Iorio were real eye-catchers throughout the race with exciting moves. It bore fruits for Vivacqua as he finished tenth. Das crossed the finish line 14th and Iorio was forced to retire on lap 14 as he was hit by Pedro Cardoso.
