Evans performed brilliantly in race 2 after a close fight with new GP2 champion Gasly. Gelael puts in recovery drive in Race 2
Pertamina Campos Racing and its duo of Indonesia´s Sean Gelael and New Zealand´s Mitch Evans put an end to 2016 season in the GP2 Series with two races held at Abu Dhabi´s Yas Marina Circuit. The Alzira-based team scored new points and both drivers showed a display of talent throughout the weekend even when the results doesn´t reflect the hard work Pertamina Campos Racing put in.
On Friday, after valuable laps in free practice session, Evans and Gelael headed into qualifying with a positive feedback. Evans secured 10th place on the starting grid with a best lap of 1:48.559 and his teammate would start from the back as he handed a three-place grid penalty.
Saturday´s feature race wasn´t that lucky for Pertamina Campos Racing at the beginning as Evans dropped two places on lap one. A few laps later, Gelael and Gustav Malja clashed and the Indonesian driver was forced to retire from the race. Meanwhile, Evans had already pitted for his mandatory pit stop. Unfortunately a second pit stop dashed is chances and he took the checkered flag in 15th place.
Sunday´s Sprint race was way more positive for Pertamina Campos Racing. Evans immediately moved up to 11th and Gelael, despite the fact he started from the pit-lane, was also making progress through the field. With a nice tire wear management, Evans passed drivers such as Nicholas Latifi or new 2016 GP2 Series champion Pierre Gasly to take 8th place. Gelael came 21st.
