Taking the start from second place on the grid, Argentina’s driver cruised to win in his Campos Racing-entered Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1 on Sunday’s Opening race after overtaking Tom Coronel
Campos Racing and Esteban Guerrieri made a nice start to the season in the 2017 World Touring Car Championship as Argentina’s driver took a crushing win at the wheel of his Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1 entered by Campos Racing.
Guerrieri showed competitive pace during Saturday’s free practice sessions and finished 6th and 7th on the time sheets. Later, in qualifying, Guerrieri posted a lap of 1:23.228 in Q2, which was good enough to secure a front-row start on Sunday’s Opening race.
An incident-packed first lap saw no less than six cars involved and the safety car was deployed to clear up the track in the meantime. Guerrieri, running in second place in the first half of the race, moved up into the lead after putting pressure on Tom Coronel. Coronel missed the breaking point and ran wide, with Guerrieri inheriting the lead. From then on, Guerrieri kept his rivals at bay and Thed Björk, with a factory-entered Volvo, couldn’t challenge him for the win. As a result, Esteban claimed his first win in the series. In race 2, Guerrieri took the checkered flag in 13th place.
Round 2 of the World Touring Car Championship will take place at Monza on 29-30 April.
